Urgent Call for Action on Equality: The Rising Challenges Facing Men and Boys in Georgia

June 12, 2026 — Recent data show that men and boys in Georgia face widening gaps in health, safety, and overall wellbeing. Without immediate reforms, these disparities will harden into long-term inequality.

Education:
Men in Georgia are falling behind women across multiple levels of education. Among youth aged 20–22 who failed to complete upper secondary education, males account for 55% of non-completers compared to 45% for females (1). The gap continues into higher education, where female tertiary enrollment reached 84.1% in 2023, compared to 72.8% for males (2)(3). Women also graduate from first-degree tertiary education programs at substantially higher rates, with a graduation ratio of 41.3% versus 29.6% for men (4)(5).

Child Labor:
According to the National Child Labor Survey, 6.3% of boys aged 5–17 were engaged in child labor, compared to 1.9% of girls, meaning boys are more than three times as likely to be involved in child labor (6).

Health:
Male life expectancy is 70.5 years, compared to 79.3 years for females (7). Men also experience much higher adult mortality rates, with 217 deaths per 1,000 adults compared to 74 per 1,000 among women (8).

Homicide:
Men in Georgia are more than three times as likely as women to be homicide victims. The homicide rate for men is 3.96 per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 1.18 for women (9).

Suicide:
Men in Georgia are disproportionately affected by suicide. The male suicide mortality rate stands at 9.4 per 100,000 population, compared to 1.2 for women, meaning men are nearly eight times more likely to die by suicide (10).

Workplace:
In 2022, workplace accidents in Georgia resulted in 330 injuries and 35 deaths. Men accounted for 261 injuries and all 35 workplace fatalities, while women experienced 69 injuries and no workplace deaths (11).

Conclusion:
Closing these gaps is not optional; it is essential for Georgia’s long-term stability and progress.

The International Council for Men and Boys (ICMB) is a non-governmental organization working to celebrate the contributions of men to society and to end the 12 sex-based disparities affecting men and boys worldwide. ICMB has conducted analyses of male disadvantage in more than 50 countries, available at https://www.menandboys.net/country/
