Courts Sentence False Accusers as International Falsely Accused Day Returns September 9

September 8, 2026 – Campaigners will gather outside the Royal Courts of Justice in London tomorrow to mark International Falsely Accused Day. (1) A second runs outside the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, and both begin at 2 p.m. (1) Organizers are planning a third event in Mexico City, at the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, at 9 a.m.

The observance began in the United Kingdom on the birthday of a campaigner falsely accused of historical child abuse who died in 2020. (1) At least 20 other countries now hold protests each year on September 9. (1)

The day covers false allegations of many kinds — rape, theft, fraud, workplace misconduct, and abuse claims raised in custody fights. (1)

The problem of false allegations is global. Courts on at least three continents have sentenced people this past year over allegations that courts found to be fabricated:

  • Victoria, Australia — August 4. The Bendigo Magistrates’ Court gave Melissa Bavington-Love a two-year community corrections order for perjury and a false declaration of truth under the Family Violence Act. (2) Her false accusations helped obtain an intervention order against her husband and contributed to his arrest. (2) He spent 53 days in custody. (2)
  • Hong Kong — July 22. The District Court sentenced Isabel Rose to six years for blackmail and perverting the course of public justice. (3) She demanded 100,000 pounds from a banker, then falsely reported to police that he had raped her. (3) He was arrested and released without charge. (3)
  • Jeonju, South Korea — July 5. A court disclosed that it had sentenced a 35-year-old woman to one year in prison for false accusation and extortion. (4) She took about 30 million won from her boyfriend, then reported him to the police for rape. (4)
  • Bolton, England — March 11. A crown court gave Stacey Sharples four and a half years for ten counts of perverting the course of justice. (5) She had falsely accused ten men of rape. (5) One told the court she ruined seven years of his life. (5)

Two further cases, in the United States and England, have been charged:

  • New Jersey, United States — July 30. A state grand jury’s superseding indictment added a charge against Randal Kelco over a second alleged false report, this one naming a municipal police officer. (6) He and a co-defendant were already under indictment over reports that state troopers sexually assaulted him. (6)
  • Liverpool, England — January 8. Prosecutors charged Esther Baker with four counts of perverting the course of justice over claims of organized child sexual abuse by public figures. (7) She has indicated not guilty pleas, and trial is set for March 22, 2027. (8) Both defendants are presumed innocent.

A YouGov survey of adults in Argentina, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States asked how many had ever been falsely accused of abuse. (9) Between 4 and 13 percent in each country said they had, men at two to three times the rate of women. (9) Between one-fifth and two-fifths of those accused said the allegation arose during a child custody dispute. (9)

ICMB asks:

  • News organizations: Report on International Falsely Accused Day and the accounts of wrongly accused people in your communities.
  • Lawmakers: Issue a proclamation or declaration recognizing September 9.
