To End the Ideological Capture of the UN, We Must Revive the Traditional Family
June 10, 2026 — The United Nations has faced growing criticisms of ideological capture in recent years. Observers say the UN has become “more politicized, less principled, and increasingly disconnected from its founding mission” (1). The recent report, “From Watchdogs to Ideologues,” documents how the Human Rights Council’s own special rapporteurs have traded neutral monitoring for political advocacy (2).
The politicization occurred at the same time as a diminishing role of the traditional family — the natural and fundamental unit of society — in UN policy and programs.
Indeed, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms that the “family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State” (3). The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights echoes the same guarantee (4).
In 1994, the UN proclaimed the International Year of the Family, honoring the family as the basic unit of society (5).
But soon, the pro-family focus began to be challenged. UN bodies increasingly advanced a sexual-rights agenda, promoting “gay marriage,” “comprehensive sexuality education,” and “autonomous sexual rights” for minors. At the same time, the family unit itself was being redefined and the rights of parents sidelined.
In response in 2008, a coalition of governments and civil-society groups founded the UN Family Rights Caucus, conceived to resist the sexual-rights movement and keep the traditional family protected under UN policy (6).
But in 2011, the Human Rights Council adopted Resolution 17/19, “Human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity,” which endorsed transgender ideology (7). Seven years later, UN Women issued an Internal Guidance Note on Strengthening Programming and Advocacy on the Rights and Empowerment of LGBTI People (8).
The same drift that politicized the UN’s human-rights machinery has pulled its family policy away from the protections promised by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Reviving the traditional family is the key to reversing it.
The International Council for Men and Boys (ICMB) is now calling on the United Nations to honor the pro-family principles that it held at its founding.
The traditional family is not only the structural basis of a flourishing and prosperous society. It is also a bulwark that deters the ideological capture of social institutions.
ICMB calls on the United Nations and its member states to:
- Reject the ideological capture of UN institutions documented in independent reviews, and return its human-rights bodies to neutral, evidence-based work.
- Reaffirm the family as “the natural and fundamental group unit of society,” as the UN’s own founding texts require.
- Recommit to marriage, children, and fathers as the three foundations of a renewed family life.
The family built every society that endures. We ask the United Nations to defend it once again.
The International Council for Men and Boys is a non-governmental organization working to end the 12 sex disparities that affect men and boys worldwide. The ICMB is a leader of the emerging global movement to address these disparities. https://www.menandboys.net/
