The realities facing men and boys in Egypt demand immediate action
September 25, 2025 – From life expectancy to workplace injuries, the numbers show a clear truth: men and boys in Egypt are bearing disproportionate burdens that remain ignored.
Health:
Men in Egypt are living shorter lives than women. Female life expectancy stands at 73.81 years, while men fall behind at 69.49 (1). Adult mortality highlights an even starker gap: 164.9 deaths per 1,000 men versus just 100.9 for women (2).
Child labor:
Boys make up the overwhelming majority of Egypt’s child labor force—76.4% compared to 23.6% for girls (3).
Homicide:
Men face a disproportionate risk of lethal violence, with a homicide rate of 4.13 per 100,000, far above the 0.54 rate for women (4).
Suicide:
Suicide also claims more men’s lives: 0.9 deaths per 100,000 compared to 0.3 for women—three times higher (5)(6).
Child custody:
Custody laws largely sideline fathers. Mothers retain custody until children turn 15, while fathers typically only gain custody if no female relatives are available or if the mother remarries, leaving many men unable to care for their own children (7).
Workplace:
Workplace injuries overwhelmingly affect men: 89.1% of cases (10,255 incidents) compared to 10.9% among women (1,255 incidents) (8).
Conclusion:
Egypt cannot ignore these realities without widening inequality; decisive action is needed to confront disparities and ensure equal safeguards for everyone.
The International Council for Men and Boys is a non-governmental organization that is working to celebrate the contributions of men to society and to end the 12 sex disparities that affect men and boys around the world. Achieving #GenderEqualityForMen will also benefit women. https://www.menandboys.net/
