Overlooked Gaps and Visible Consequences Reveal the Male Disadvantages in Israel
August 8, 2025 – Across Israel, men and boys are facing growing challenges in education, health, justice, and beyond—yet their struggles remain largely overlooked in public debate. The data tells a story of imbalance that demands urgent attention.
Education:
Women now make up 58% of all bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree recipients in Israel, while men account for only 42% (1). The imbalance begins early—dropout rates among boys in Jerusalem reach 6.22%, over three times that of girls at 1.81% (2).
Health:
The male health gap is significant: women’s life expectancy is 85.5 years, while men’s is 81 (3). Adult mortality among men is more than double that of women—82.5 vs. 38.5 per 1,000 (4).
Homicide:
The homicide rate for men is nearly six times higher than that of women—2.78 per 100,000 vs. 0.48 (5).
Suicide:
Men are more than twice as likely to die by suicide—6.3 per 100,000, compared to 2.5 for women (6)(7).
Child Custody:
In child custody cases, women receive exclusive custody in 90.8% of cases, while men receive it in just 3.9%. Joint and split custody account for just 1.4% each (8).
Homelessness:
Latest national estimates show 3,900 individuals experiencing homelessness in Israel—87% of them are men, highlighting a significant gender imbalance among the nation’s most vulnerable (9).
Workplace:
Of 44,740 injury-related hospitalizations in Israel, nearly 70% were men, and 67.8% were due to workplace accidents, underscoring the disproportionate risks they face on the job (10).
Conclusion:
Israel must acknowledge and address the gender gaps affecting its men and boys, because leaving them behind helps no one.
The International Council for Men and Boys is a non-governmental organization that is working to celebrate the contributions of men to society and to end the 12 sex disparities that affect men and boys around the world. Achieving #GenderEqualityForMen will also benefit women.
